National Nursing Home Week is May 8-14 this year. It’s one of our favorite weeks here at Barbourville Health and Rehabilitation Center! This year’s theme is “It’s a Small World, with a Big Heart.”
Residents and staff celebrated by learning about countries all around the world! We studied countries throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. Our residents’ favorite country to study was Italy, because we got to enjoy delicious Italian food!
National Nursing Home Week was established by the American Health Care Association in 1967. It is a week that encourages those who work in long-term care to reflect on their roles and how to best help improve the lives of residents and their families.
The national theme, “It’s a Small World, with a Big Heart,” is inspired by two songs–Disney’s “It’s a Small World After All” and the New Seekers’ “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” These songs convey timeless, relevant messages. The phrase, “With a Big Heart” represents our staff and what they share with each resident–individualized care, social interaction, and a compassionate heart.
